Push for Young Doctors to Go Rural

A rural Not for Profit network is teaming up with Rural Health Workforce Australia to get more young doctors and medical students into rural areas.

The Go Rural campaign, run by Rural Health Workforce Australia in partnership with the national network of Not for Profit Rural Workforce Agencies, will showcase the professional and lifestyle rewards of rural medicine, including access to some of the best training experiences in the country.

“Rural general practice is full of variety and is a great choice for young people who want to make a difference,” RHWA General Manager – Programs, Jo-Anne Chapman, said.

“You learn so much, help so many and really broaden your horizons.

“Now is a good time to consider a move because the Department of Health is offering incentives up to $120,000 to relocate.

“But it’s more than just the money that we want to tell people about: the country is a great place to raise a family and connect with a community that values your skills.”

Medical graduates can also reduce their HECS debt if they train or work in rural and remote areas and doctors already working in regional and remote locations may be able to access retention payments of up to $47,000.

Rural Workforce Agencies are running a series of Go Rural events around the country including skills days, regional bus tours and opportunities to meet experienced rural doctors.
