Sydney Mayor Donates Salary - Again

The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore has again donated her Mayoral Salary to inner-city charities.
The donation of $114,590 brings the total donations from Clover Moore’s Lord Mayoral salary to over $953,000 since she was elected in 2004.
The $114,590 donation will help improve literacy among disadvantaged children, reduce discrimination against women on the street and protect abandoned animals.
The Mayor says she was deeply proud of the 45 projects her Lord Mayoral salary had supported.
Moore says that by donating her Lord Mayoral salary, she can directly help some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the community.
In seven years, she has donated $953,000 to 45 projects – helping people who live and work on the streets, who are dependent on drugs and alcohol and the mentally ill to rebuild their lives.
The Mayor also receives a salary as a NSW Member of Parliament, and donates 100% of the Lord Mayor’s fees for charitable purposes through her Trust.
The five grants will be given to:
- Inner City Cadre Project ($42,000): A service that trains people with mental health issues, their carers and the community to help care for each other. Mental health is a key issue for public housing tenants, and the project will involve Department of Housing tenants in Northcott, Woolloomooloo, Glebe, Redfern, Ultimo and Millers Point over the next two years.
- Sydney Story Factory ($25,000): Promoting literacy among children by encouraging a love of words and stories. Cunningly disguised as a dragon-slaying fantasy shop, the Redfern centre will open in September offering one-on-one tutoring and workshops for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly from Aboriginal backgrounds and where English is not the first language. Volunteer tutors will help 50 children a week by the end of 2011, rising to 200 a week by 2013. The grant will support a demonstration “pop up” shop at the 2011 Sydney Writers’ Festival, in May, to recruit volunteer tutors and let families see the project in action.
- RESPECT: A Woman’s Right ($20,000): Supporting homeless women, sex workers and other women in need at Lou’s Place, Potts Point. The grant will allow Lou’s Place to develop training programs for police recruits and emergency department staff to combat discrimination against such women.
- Culture at Work ($11,590): Helping socially disadvantaged and isolated women explore their creativity and connect with others through art therapy
- Staffy Rescue ($16,000): Finding loving homes for unwanted and abandoned dogs. The grant will allow Staffy Rescue to buy another 10 kennels and dog beds, helping rescue more dogs.
Past grants have supported projects tackling dual diagnosis (the combination of mental illness and alcohol/drug dependence); providing educational opportunities for Aboriginal children and helping ex-prisoners rejoin the community.

The statement ” The Mayor also receives a salary as a NSW Member of Parliament, and donates 100% of the Lord Mayor’s fees for charitable purposes through her Trust.” is not entirely correct and can be misleading.
As I understand it, the Mayor donates the taxable portion of her Lord Mayor fees to the charity, for which she receives a 100% tax deduction. The balance of her Lord Mayoral fees she keeps (that is the portion against which she has allowable deductions because of expenditure incurred in carrying out her duties).
No matter how you slice & dice it, or your political persuasion, it is still very generous thing to do … You don’t see any other pollies following suit. Well done Clover Moore.
