About the role

Could you open your heart and home to a vulnerable child? Become a Home Based Carer with Berry Street!

Berry Street is Victoria’s largest independent child welfare organisation that never gives up doing whatever it takes for kids. We are searching for caring and resourceful couples or individuals for the increasing number of children in need of a safe and supportive home. Across the South Eastern suburbs there are over 200 children and young people who need sensitive and attentive homes.

As a carer, you can help Berry Street achieve its vision that every child should have a good childhood, growing up in families and communities where they feel safe, nurtured and with hope for the future.

Care for a child and young people can be provided in your own home with a generous non- taxable allowance or in one of our properties with rental, amenities and living costs covered. Berry Street is keen to hear from caring community minded people who can care for children.

Monica is a 10 year old girl who enjoys school and loves playing soccer. Sadly, she needs to stay in foster care for 3-12 months to give her mother the best opportunity to set her up following the break up with her violent partner. Ashley is 16 years old who has living in residential and foster care since childhood. He is ready to learn independent living skills. He is keen to live with one or two adults who will act as Lead Tenants to support and help him on his journey to adulthood.

The role of the carer is as rewarding as it is challenging! Children and young people like Monica and Ashley need a secure base, with a carer who can sensitively respond to their needs, encourages their confidence and can connect them with their family and community. Whilst the Foster Care and Lead Tenant roles are voluntary, a generous fortnightly (tax free) foster care allowance is provided and Lead Tenants can live free with rental and all amenities costs covered. In addition regular, well-structured support and development will be provided by our team of experienced Case managers.

So, you think this could be for you? Are you:

  • Patient, calm and resilient
  • Able to provide a secure and nurturing home
  • Willing to care for children (0-17 years)?
