Tie-dye face masks helping raise money for sick kids

A Chicago woman is adding some colour to people’s pandemic-safe look for a good cause
Wearing a face mask has become one of the unfortunate realities of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. But that doesn’t mean you have to look drab and grey.
A woman in the US has used the lockdown to make and sell tie-dyed face masks to raise money for a local children’s hospital.
Chicago resident Bailey Catanese told Book Club Chicago that she began tie-dyeing face masks in April as a fun project to do with her two small children.
She said after getting a positive response to posting the masks on social media, she realised she could sell the masks to raise money for Lurie Children’s Hospital, where her sister-in-law works.
After selling 300 masks within 48 hours, Catanese has now raised over $3,200 and sold more than 1,000 masks.
“I know how hard all those people over there are working, and I know how important what they’re doing is,” Catanese said.
“Anything I can do to help slow the spread of the virus and donate to the Lurie is a no-brainer.”
Catanese’s masks have been sold all over America and she said she plans to continue making them during the pandemic.
She isn’t the only one selling face masks for a good cause.
Photographer Kristian Binder is designing and selling face masks to show off his own photos, as well as high resolution shots of bead and moose hide work by Denise McDonald.
All of Binder’s profits from the sales are going directly to Inuvik Food Bank in Canada.
