The International Year of Volunteers (IYV) 2001 has already kicked off with an opening ceremony last week in New York by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The Global launch takes place tomorrow (Dec 5th) with International Volunteer Day…in which 82 countries have set up national committees to showcase their IYV events, including Australia.

The latest news and links of national committees can be found at www.iyv2001.org. In the past year, the monthly visits to the site have increased from 18,000 to more than 265,000 in November. To date 3,000 global volunteer organisations have listed their groups.

In Australia the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services is hosting the local activities with a special web site which is now up and running at www.facs.gov.au and follow the prompts to IYV 2001.
