Inaugural International Volunteer Day Celebrations
10 November 2003 at 12:11 pm

Australian Volunteers International will host a free public event at Federation Square to celebrate International Volunteer Day on Sunday December 7.

‘Carnivale’ is a thank you to all Australians who volunteer at a local, national or international level – from a CFA member to an accountant in Afghanistan, from a conservationist to a phone counsellor.

Dimity Fifer, CEO of Australian Volunteers International says Carnivale is a Melbourne street party to celebrate the work of hundreds of thousands of volunteers with live music, dance and sumptuous food.

Communities come to life through the spirit and energy of volunteers. December 7 is a celebration of that energy.
International Volunteer Day recognises the value of volunteering across the globe. The United Nations General Assembly has formally set aside December 5 of each year to acknowledge the extraordinary support and contribution of volunteers and voluntary effort in communities all over the world.

Carnivale has been developed collaboratively by Victorian volunteer organisations headed by Australian Volunteers International. Carnivale will be held each year on the first Sunday of December.

In 2003, the inaugural event will be celebrated on Sunday December 7. The participating organisations include Australian Conservation Foundation, Conservation Volunteers Australia, Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria, Office of Emergency Services, Municipal Association of Victoria, VicHealth, Victorian Council of Social Services, Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition, Victorian Local Governance Association, Victorian Multicultural Commission, Volunteering Victoria, YMCA, YWCA.

Organisers decided that as this would be the inaugural celebration of International Volunteer Day they would concentrate on one major activity rather than celebrations in each state.

If your organisations is holding a volunteer event to celebrate December 5th why not send us the details so that we can place them on our events pages. Send an email to probono@probonoaustralia.com.au.
