NSW - Australian Biggest Sports Volunteers - Survey
20 October 2008 at 5:26 pm

New South Welshmen love their sport and they are Australia’s biggest sports volunteers, according to the results of a major nationwide survey released by the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games.

In the survey of 300 New South Wales residents aged 35 and over, 68 per cent of respondents indicated that they are interested in volunteering at an event such as the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games, 94 per cent said that sport is a major part of Australia’s national identity and 83 per cent agreed that hosting a major international sports event is good for Australia and its international image.

Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Chair Margy Osmond says the Organising
Committee was “blown away” by the results.

Osmond says the organisation is thrilled to find the vast majority of respondents were supportive of hosting a big event.

New South Wales respondents were very positive when asked whether Australians who excel in sporting internationally were strong role models for young Australians, with 74 per cent in agreement.

The survey also uncovered a wealth of potential volunteers. More than two-thirds of New South Wales respondents expressed interest in volunteering at a major international multi-sport event.

Osmond says this equated to about 6000 volunteers.
