A Brief History of the NDIS - Timeline

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is Australia’s biggest social policy project since Medicare. As we reach the one year milestone since the national rollout began, Pro Bono News looks back at some of the key events that have lead to the NDIS as it is today.
The NDIS promises to revolutionise disability services and give people with disability more choice and control.
But it has been a long and winding road to get here.
The scheme comes off the back of years of discussion about the need for a major reform of disability services in Australia that better reflects the needs of people with disability.
It was in 2010 that the Australian government first asked the Productivity Commission to carry out a public inquiry into a long-term disability care and support scheme.
By March 2013 the NDIS legislation was passed and the NDIS Act 2013 was created, along with the scheme and the National Disability Insurance Agency.
After three years of pilots, the NDIS began its national rollout on 1 July 2016.
