Anti-Racism Race combats racism through surrealism

A quirky new format is shining a light on the resources available to support people who experience racism.

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC) is using tongue-in-cheek humour to tackle one of the most pressing issues facing our community: racism.

VEOHRC has partnered with not-for-profit screen industry association Cinespace to create a short film with the premise of a game show that tests contestants on their knowledge of racism.

The surrealist game show, called Anti-Racism Race, features characters from different walks of life competing through game-show-style rounds and even an actual race, to win an anti-racist championship.

Contestants are interviewed throughout the process to get their thoughts on the issue.

The Anti-Racism Race aims to encourage people to report racism through the use of the Community Report Tool and VEOHRC’s complaints and enquiries services.

It also promotes VEOHRC’s Reducing Racism hub, which now includes resources including the Reporting Racism chatbot, translated factsheets and audio translations, the There’s No Place for Racism stakeholder kit and a services directory.

The Reducing Racism hub and its resources have been designed to support people who experience racism to understand their rights, know the options available to report their experiences, and obtain help.

The short film was supported by funding from the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
