Philip Bateman sits down with Alan Schwartz AM to talk about the nature of capitalism and why creating change is deeply political, in our latest episode of Smarter Impact.

Alan Schwartz AM is a capitalist, philanthropist, impact investor and social activist. He is currently the managing director of the Trawalla group, the family office for the Schwartz family, and is the founder of the Universal Commons.

In this interview he talks about what it means to be a good capitalist, the tragedy of the commons, putting a price on carbon, and the importance of philanthropy as social venture capital.

He also explains how he came to a “late onset political awakening” that to change capitalism you have to convince the government to change the rules of the game, and he shares why he is now keen to help others who are on that journey.
