Beating the holiday blues

It’s arguably the dullest time of the year. If you’re feeling low, here are some tips for getting back into the swing of things.

We’re three weeks into the new year, and by now most of us have gone back to work.

Well, physically at least. Your head’s probably still in holiday mode.

And these first couple of weeks of January can be a real drag, especially if you’ve got friends, family or colleagues who are still out of the office.

So how do you beat the back to work blues and get back in the game?

Be reasonable with yourself

If you’re not firing on all cylinders in the first few weeks, try not to stress. It’s unlikely that anyone is, after all. Do your best, take regular breaks, leave on time, and set reasonable goals for what you’ll achieve at work. If you need help, ask for it. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Unwind properly

Make sure you set aside time once you get home to do something you love, whether that’s cooking, going for a run, swimming in the ocean or watching TV with the kids. Likewise, if the floor isn’t vacuumed or you don’t have enough juice in the tank to cook dinner tonight, don’t beat yourself up. You’ll get back into the routine eventually, but for now, ease back into it.

Plan something

It’s hair of the dog, but for holidays! One of the best ways to perk yourself up is to plan more time off. Get the calendar out and start planning — whether it’s a daytrip, a weekend away, a few days interstate or a couple of weeks overseas, you’ve earned it. You’ll be surprised by how quickly the cloud will lift with the prospect of something exciting to look forward to.

Quit your job

Yes, it sounds extreme, but if the blues don’t go away as we move further into the work year, it might be time to consider whether your job is giving you what you need. Is it just a paycheck? Do you feel satisfied, challenged, appreciated? If not, fire up the job search site and see what else is out there.

Seek professional help

Be aware of your mind and body. If you find that you can’t shake the gloom, get yourself down to the doctor and ask them for professional help. There may be an underlying issue. Your health is everything, and it’s not worth sacrificing for a job. Look after yourself.
